Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science and Hydrology Student Funding Opportunities

This is not an all inclusive list but rather what I have been able to come up with so far. If you know of additional opportunities, please contact me and I will add them to the list.

  • American Association of University Women, Selected Professions Fellowships:
    Awarded to women to pursue graduate degrees in designated fields to include science, engineering and math. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applications typically due in January of each year.
  • American Society of Civil Engineers
    various fellowships listed on their website in addition to the J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship listed here. Most applications due in February of each year.
    • J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship: Awarded to students to pursue research in the field of experimental hydraulics. The purpose of the award is to encourage research in the field of experimental hydraulics. Past awards $1-4,000. Applications typically due in February each year.
  • American Water Resources Association (AWRA)
    Each applicant must be a AWRA student member. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student working toward his/her first undergraduate degree and who is enrolled in a program related to water resources. One $2,000 scholarship will also be awarded to a full-time graduate student enrolled in a program relating to water resources. Applications typically due in April of each year.
  • American Water Works Association
    various fellowships listed on their website in addition to the ones listed below:
    • Abel Wolman Fellowship: Designed to support doctoral and masters students interested in careers in the fields of corrosion control, treatment and distribution of domestic and industrial water supplies, aquatic chemistry, and/or environmental chemistry. Masters: $5,000 one-time grant, Doctoral: $7,000 one-time grant Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Larson Aquatic Research Support: Designed to support promising doctoral students in the U.S., Canada and Mexico pursuing advanced training and research in the field of water supply and treatment. Awards up to $25,000, renewable for a second year. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Thomas R. Camp Scholarship: Scholarship provides support to graduate students doing applied research in the drinking water field. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Holly A. Cornell Scholarship: Scholarship encourages and supports outstanding female and/or minority masters students in pursuit of advanced training in the field of water supply and treatment. CH2M Hill will assist the recipient with travel costs to the AWWA annual conference where the award will be presented. Awards $7,500 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • American Water Scholarship: American Water is providing graduate level support to assist the development of professionals interested in service to the water industry. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Black & Veatch – Building a World of Difference Scholarship: Provides support to an undergraduate student seeking a degree in the water industry. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Carollo Engineers Inc. Scholarship: Provides support to a masters student engaging in water-energy nexus issues for water, wastewater or water use. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Malcolm Pirnie Graduate Scholarship: Provides support to a masters or doctoral candidate student seeking a degree in the water industry. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • MWH Scholarship: Provides support to a masters student seeking a degree in the water industry. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Hazen and Sawyer Scholarship : Provides support to a master’s student in the water science field. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • HDR/Henry “Bud” Benjes Scholarship : Provides support to a masters student seeking a degree in the water industry. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
    • Echologics Scholarship : Provides one-time support to a mechanical engineering graduate student with an emphasis in acoustics and a strong interest in sustainability and water infrastructure. Awards $5,000 one-time grant. Applications due January 15 annually.
  • Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO)
    Successful recipients must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams. Applications due March 31 annually.
  • Boren Fellowship
    Provides up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency.. Boren Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Areas of study include sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. Applications due in January of each year.
  • Colorado Groundwater Association Harlan Erker Memorial Scholarship
    Provides up to $2000 to graduate students and senior undergraduates (as of Fall 2012) currently attending an accredited college or university in Colorado. Applications due May of each year.
  • Environmental Engineers of the Future
    Sponsored by public agencies and private engineering firms, the program prepares students to practice in the municipal water, wastewater, and solid waste management fields. Provides masters degree funding for students in environmental engineering in return for a 2-year employment commitment.
  • Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs
    The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Award $20,000 and expenses paid to attend one Conference of Ford Fellows. Applications due in November annually.
  • Hertz Fellowship
    Award that is renewable for up to five years of support for the graduate education of students in the applied physical sciences. The intent is to foster the postgraduate studies of students who seem likely to become leaders in scientific and technological advances, exemplars of teaching skills in the applied physical sciences, and key contributors to the technological capability on which the well-being of the United States depends. The annual stipend is $31,000 for Option 1 (with full tuition equivalent and renewable for up to five years) and $36,000 for Option 2 (provides for two years of stipends and tuition equivalent then is reduced to $3,000 supplemental annual stipend for the following three years during which the Awardee must accept a Fellowship from another source). Applications typically due in August.
  • NDSEG
    National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest. The Department of Defense supports the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship, which covers tuition and required fees for three years. It also provides a yearly stipend up to $31,500. Applications typically due in January.
  • NSF Graduate Fellowship Program
    Provides three years of funding ($30,000 annual stipend and approximately $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to the institution) for research-focused Masters and PhD degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Applications typically due in November annually.
  • SMART
    The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. Scholarships awarded include a cash award of $25,000 to $41,000 a year, full tuition, required fees, health insurance allowance, and book allowance. SMART will allow individuals to acquire an education in exchange for a period of employment with the DoD.
  • Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Scholarship
    The Environmental Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration annually awards one or more scholarships to college students who desire to develop their skills related to mining and the environment. The total amount of the award (approximately $5,000) is given to one or more students at the discretion of the Division. A Scholarship may be awarded to a student(s) who is a member of SME, attending a college or university of his or her choice that provides a curriculum leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree related to mining and the environment and a faculty advisor with special interests in an environmentally oriented program. A desire for a career related to mining and the environment will be an important factor in selection of the successful candidate.

    Any student that applies for the Environmental Division Scholarship can also be considered for the Veolia Water scholarship, $2,000 sponsored by Veolia Water Solutions $ Technologies by writing a short essay (250 words or less) on why water is an essential part of the mining process.
  • US EPA STAR Program
    Graduate fellowship program supports masters and doctoral candidates in environmental studies. Awards up to $42,000 per year of, including $12,000 per year for tuition and fees, $25,000 per year in a monthly stipend, and an annual expense allowance of $5,000. Masters level students can receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students can be supported for a maximum of three years with funding available, under certain circumstances, over a period of four years. Applications typically due in October.
